What is your name? Job Klijn.
Where do you live? Born in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. Emigrated to New Zealand in 1988.
What is your favourite city/country? Paris. Oozing its history and culture. Hours walking off the main boulevards and explore alleys and side streets. Magic.
Since when do you work as an artist? I took it more seriously in 2015. I have no education or training whatsoever in this (I an originally a teacher by trade) and am completely self-taught.
What is your favourite colour? Natural organic colours. Ochres. Lately I am leaning towards darker blues.
What inspires you? Scenic expanse. Sea. Oceans. Light. Art. A glass of wine. A good book. Beach sand between my toes. Cappachino. Chocolate. Determination of my daughter. The struggles of my son. Strength and soul of my wife. Isolation of my studio.
Who is your favourite artist? Anselm Kiefer.
Which is your favourite art work? Anselm Kiefer – Palmsonntag. Absolutely majestic. With all our ugliness and evil, human mankind can come up with beauty.
How would you describe your art with a few words? Moody, brooding turbulence.
What makes you happy? Wittiness. Finishing a painting that I am content with. Sitting at a beach in The Coromandel. Heavy rain clattering on the roof with the woodburner roaring.
What makes you sad? Social media.
If you could make a video of a moment in your life, which would you choose?
The moment I saw my wife for the first time on the beach in Cannes in her one-piece bathing suit. Life simply stopped. Fade to black. The End.
